Saracens Head
On 4th March 2026, the council facilitated a village meeting, attended by 40 residents, to discuss the sale of the Saracens Head. The pub is designated as an Asset of Community Value because of its importance to our village. The freehold sale price is £700,000 + VAT and the selling agent is Christie & Co.
Everybody at the meeting agreed they would like to see the Saracens Head continue trading as a pub offering food and drink and owned / managed by people experienced in the hospitality sector. However, should no offers come forward, the local community would then have the option of raising the funds to purchase the premises. At the end of the meeting residents gave their email details to the Clerk, so that they could be kept up to date with developments.
If you were unable to attend the meeting but would like to be kept up to date, please send an email to clerk@newton-pc.gov.uk requesting to join the Saracens group. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact anybody from the council.
Neighbourhood Plan review
On Saturday 28th March 2026 starting at 10am in the Village Hall, the council will be holding its Coffee Morning. This year we will be holding a briefing on the review of the Newton Neighbourhood Plan, where the working party will be starting the consultation process with you.
Since the original plan was adopted by Babergh District Council in March 2022, many changes are happening in the planning process including targets by the current government of building 1,500,000 dwellings over the length of this parliament. Babergh has indicated that this could mean an extra 86 dwellings in Newton.
With the overall objective of a Neighbourhood Plan being to help facilitate where development should be planned for the village, your input on this will be essential. If you can spare a couple of hours on the 28th March your attendance would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to attend but would like more information please contact the Chairman, Paul Presland, at paul.presland@newton-pc.gov.uk as he is on the working party.
The newly formed working party met in January to start the process of reviewing the plan adopted by Babergh in 2022 as one of its planning policies. Find minutes of the working party's meetings.
Pedestrian Crossing Survey
In July 2025, Newton Parish Council undertook a survey with its residents, on behalf of Suffolk Highways, to obtain their feedback on the potential use of a pedestrian crossing on the A134. Of the 250 households in Newton, 90 (36%) responded to the survey.
