Road works on the A134 in Newton

Suffolk Highways are planning to carry out improvement works in our area.
What will we be doing?	Phase 1 – Surface dressing preparation Phase 2 – Surface dressing Phase 3 – Reinstatement of road markings
Where will we be doing it?	A134 Sudbury Road, Newton Assington Road, Newton Further Street, Assington (part of from Assington Road, Newton to A1071)
What are the times and dates of the works?	Phase 1 – Monday 22 June to Saturday 27 June, from 8pm to 5am Phase 2 – Friday 17 July to Saturday 18 July, from 4am to 9am Phase 3 – Wednesday 12 August to Thursday 20 August, from 8pm to 5am
What traffic management will be in place?	While we are working, a road closure will be in place for the safety of highway users and our operatives.   Surface dressing is a very quick process but is also weather dependent. We have scheduled a time window to give us the best chance of completing the work successfully. Please note that the road closure is unlikely to last for the entire duration stated above.
What is the diversion route?	A134, A133, A1124, A131 and vice versa

  

What do I need to know about the temporary road closure?

 

Road closures are sometimes essential for the safety of road users and our operatives. If you are based within the closure, we will maintain access where possible. However, there may be times when access is delayed or restricted. Please plan your journeys accordingly and speak to operatives on-site if you require further information.

Works were not carried out as advised. What is happening?

Sometimes we are unable to complete works as planned. This could be due to vehicles parked on the road, or because of a variety of other reasons often beyond our control.

If we need to make major changes to our works dates, we will update the information signs on site. You will also receive another letter advising of the new date in advance.

PLEASE RESPECT OUR WORKERS Please help keep our workers safe by driving carefully and slowly through the roadworks. Feedback from our workers shows that too many drivers go too fast through roadworks. Everybody is entitled to a safe workplace. Our operatives work next to moving traffic and risk injury every day. Please remain polite and respectful to our workers whilst they are in your area. There is no excuse for abuse.

Saracens Head

On 4^th March 2026, the council facilitated a village meeting, attended by 40 residents, to discuss the sale of the Saracens Head. The pub is designated as an Asset of Community Value because of its importance to our village. The freehold sale price is £700,000 + VAT and the selling agent is Christie & Co.

 Everybody at the meeting agreed they would like to see the Saracens Head continue trading as a pub offering food and drink and owned / managed by people experienced in the hospitality sector. However, should no offers come forward, the local community would then have the option of raising the funds to purchase the premises. At the end of the meeting residents gave their email details to the Clerk, so that they could be kept up to date with developments.

Pedestrian Crossing Survey

In July 2025, Newton Parish Council undertook a survey with its residents, on behalf of Suffolk Highways, to obtain their feedback on the potential use of a pedestrian crossing on the A134. Of the 250 households in Newton, 90 (36%) responded to the survey.

GoStart Community Transport

GoStart is an independent voluntary organisation providing accessible community transport for older people, individuals with disabilities, community groups and local charities. Our services help people remain connected, independent and supported within our local community.

Based in Sudbury, we operate within an 8-mile radius, serving areas including Great Cornard, Acton, Long Melford, Great Waldingfield, Lavenham, Glemsford and Cavendish, with further-afield journeys available by advance booking. Our fleet includes accessible minibuses and MPVs fitted with ramps or lifts to accommodate wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility. All volunteer drivers are fully trained, DBS checked and MiDAS qualified.
